Since qualifying with BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy at Brunel University in London in 2000, Helen has worked within the NHS for over twenty years.
In 2009 Helen moved into the Neuro specialism, working in a variety of settings including: acute inpatients, private inpatient rehabilitation and community rehabilitation developing a wide range of skills and experience around the impact of acquired brain injury and other neurological conditions on cognition, physical function and vision.
Helen has a keen interest and expertise in the area of acquired brain injury to include assessment of cognition through function and acknowledges the importance of education in helping to build insight, empower patients and help patients find strategies to overcome their difficulties.
Helen has a strong belief in Occupational Therapy as being a key role within the Multi-disciplinary Team to promote and enhance people’s independence, quality of life through the collaboration and joint working with other professionals to help patients achieve their goals.
Helen currently works as Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist within the Neurosciences team at North Bristol NHS Trust, providing supervision, support and management for a team of both qualified and non-qualified staff in co-ordination and conjunction with the large acute inpatient multi-disciplinary team.
Alongside this role Helen has been working for Totus Rehabilitation since October 2022, providing private Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment for a small caseload of patients, often working with the Totus MDT to provide an interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation. This role has helped to further enhance and develop Helen’s report writing and goal setting skills in in collaboration with the patient, their families, their support workers, the MDT and case managers to provide efficient and effective rehabilitation to those patients who have experienced catastrophic injuries.
Within this role Helen has gained new knowledge and understanding of the litigation process and the role of the case manager both in practice and following attendance to training days provided by Stokes Case Management. Helen is keen to explore this new role, utilising her 20 years’ experience as a clinician.
Helen is a member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and the Specialist Section for Neurology, maintaining and continuing to develop her skills through reflection, self-directed learning and attendance to training.
